Jargon

  • Captive - Refers to an offshore facility that is part of the company (e.g. an internal development center located overseas).
  • CRO – Chief Resource Officer. A position in buyer companies dedicated to managing outsourcing.  
  • Bestshoring - Outsourcing to wherever best suits the needs of the organization.
  • Crowdsourcing – Outsourcing through a collaboration of amateurs or volunteers. Inclusive but not limited to open source software development.
  • Homeshoring - Outsourcing to a domestic company.
  • Multishoring - Outsourcing to a combination of countries.
  • Nearshoring – Outsourcing to a nearby country. In the US this would include Canada, Mexico, and Latin America.
  • ODC - Offshore development center.
  • Offshoring – Outsourcing to a distant country. In the US this would include India, China, the Philippines, etc.
  • Reverse Offshoring – Outsourcing to a rural or economically depressed domestic location. This is becoming a popular alternative for front office outsourcing since it eliminates language and time zone issues.
